I love hearing classic tunes in other languages. I think the vocals for Sailor Moon were globally bad and/or cheesy, but at least Mexico didn't get the annoying Kidsongs kids :[.
Actually, if you see the American version, It's more of an "arranged" tune, there's a section where the kids enthusiastically shout out the names of all the Sailor Scouts. Also, the b-section of the original tune did not survive. When I arranged the tune for the first Anime Chipdisk, I discovered how much of the original song I had missed, and how much more annoying it was in English.
I also watched the all the original 40-someething episodes recently, in Japanese. It's a lot better than I remembered! You guys should try that sometime. You'll notice some old clichés and a lot of the show is pretty formulaic, but there's some pretty emotional moments. There's also, surprisingly, more implied yaoi than implied yuri, though the subtle stuff regarding Sailor Mercury and Mars is pretty funny.
So, one of the things that we're glad about here on Nekomimi Music is that, being a blog and not a "ReMixing" site, we aren't limited by the constraints of those websites. And one of those things we have the freedom to post, while other great sites don't, is mashups. For those of you who aren't really familiar with the mashup phenomenon, Wikipedia describes it pretty well, but I'll give you a basic run-down: you take the music of one song, and the vocals of another song, and put them together. Well, TheMacAttack (remove "SPAMSUCKS" for email) of Melbourne, Australia has brought us our first mashup, with the music of Scryed's opening theme "Reckless Fire" combined with the a capella of Gackt's Vanilla (thanks for the correction). The result works almost startlingly well, and you'll probably wonder if the lyrics were made for the song. There's also a little bit more than Gackt thrown in: a recording of the War of the Worlds drama, and a little rapping by 2 Brothers on the Floor, which also fits uncannily. For those of you who haven't heard Reckless Fire, it's a pretty awesome song to start, with Spanish as well as electric guitar, orchestral hits, a cheesey horn section, and a solid techno drum beat powering the whole thing. According to TheMacAttack, he was just brushing up his multimedia editing skills and doing some mashups for fun when his friends requested this - and the result was a surprise even to him.
I guarantee you'll be rocking along with it, so download it now!
And if you're as much a fan of it as I am, you might also be interested to know that TheMacAttack has several more a capellas of anime songs (including stuff from BECK and Chobits, among others), and he's totally willing to pass them along to would-be remixers and mashup creators for their use in making new stuff. And, of course, we here at Nekomimi Music would only be too happy to post it.
Rock on, and may the cat ears be with you.
P.S. I had some problems posting entries, dunno why. It seems to be fine now. And yes, there was some downtime earlier. Hopefully I will be able to afford a real host sometime.
Yo, this is red, the third member of nekomimi music. Unlike soc, my posts will be mostly about anime and anime music in general. After all, I'm not a remixer :p . But before writting further about anime, I think it is in order for me to do a quick presentation. So yea, like soc said, I'm a canadian and a quebecer to be more precise (for those who do not know what that is, think "french canadian"). Beside going to college and getting drunk with friends, I spend most of my time watching anime and playing games. Yea, that's pretty geeky, but do you know many geeks who enjoy history, politic, philosophy, anime, videogames, hockey, tabletop roleplaying, computers and french litterature? Beside me, I do not, but I wish I did :P . My favorite videogame composer is Motoi Sakuraba (think tales of phantasia and star ocean) and I don't really have a favorite anime music composer (Yoko kanno is pretty good though).
So, now that this is done, let's talk about anime. Lately, I have been watching this anime called Welcome to the NHK . I'm guessing most of you have already hear of it (if not, give yourself some good time by watching the first episode. You shouldn't regret it) and this is not really the best space to discuss it. What I'd like to talk about more precisely is the first ending. I have recently gotten the single for this song (Odoru akachan ningen) and it is quite awesome. It contains 2 other songs beside Odoru akachan ningen, which are all pseudo j-metal stuff. I highly recommend getting it if you ever find it anywhwere. Even if it's only 3 songs, believe me, it's worth it.
So, I guess this is enough for today. I am already getting ideas for future entries, but for that you guys will have to wait :p .
A dangerously catchy Disney cartoon theme turned 8-bit, making it even more infectious. I've never heard of this dude before, but somehow he makes his .nsf files with MML, which takes mad programming skills. For the leet guys, I have uploaded the original .nsf to my site: kptheme.nsf - 24kb
Next up we have a new DistantJ track, called "Run With Us," covering "The Raccoons," which I have never heard of. Featuring someone named Spray. I wonder if that's who's behind the female vocals? Since there's no actual writeup for the song yet, looks like I'll have to tell you about it. This is standard DistantJ UNTS, so it's a dancey, happy trance tune. DistantJ hails from the U.K. with a completely different '80s nostalgia compared to America. We got G.I. Joe and Ninja Turtles, they got The Raccoons and Watership Down. (mDuo13's Note: this is just opinion, but as much as I like Watership down I have to say the British got the short end of the stick this time.) Doing some research here, Spray seems to be a U.K. synthpop group that covered the theme song recently, and DistantJ seems to have borrowed the vocals.
I think this is my first "blog" blog post ever. I have my own site [by mDuo, of course] with a news column but it just isn't the same! Okay, I guess I should say a bit about myself. I'm Scott, I go by OverCoat [or soc] online. Unlike the other two dudes posting on this blog, I actually write music. Well, mDuo writes music, kind of, but that's not his main focus. Meanwhile Redcavalier just does... Canadian stuff. As for my taste in anime music, I tend to not listen to just any soundtrack, rather unique ones, like Hellsing or Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Some OSTs are just so beautiful yet underappreciated, the two favorites of mine being Kokoro Library, all written by Hisaaki Hogari, and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou's wonderful second OVA, done by both Choro Club and Taku Iwasaki. They're both so emotional and relaxing that listening to both in succession may put you in a small coma.
We are all connected though, by Anime Remix. Basically the ONLY site available if you want fan-arrangements of anime tunes. I admit, it's pretty niche, but I have a few songs up there already [here is a nice list showing all 4, and what anime they are from]. You may have a problem downloading the songs, but that's because the site isn't really done yet. We waited and waited and waited some more, and we just got tired of it and started our own site. Don't hate Matt [Xaleph] though. He's cool, but just far too busy to finish AR.
You'll notice a site url on that page. It's outdated! This is my new site. I don't exactly have a lot of arranged anime material, unless you count the chipdisk on mDuo's last post, of course. I really should start working on a new song.
Here is a list of upcoming material from myself and my wonderful friends!
-A Kokoro Library mix [!!!] by Tepid.
-Fray may or may not finish his Chobits tune
-I personally have "YKK-Yuunagi, like Radix - Counting Stars" on the todo board in my room :) Fans of Radix [who isn't one?] should like it. I haven't started yet but once I get some other projects out of the way it'll be done quickly.
-I could be starting Anime Chipdisk Vol. 2 sometime soon! There's no schedule for it, but I really want to make another one, since the first one was ASTRONOMICALLY fun to write.
